COE 2018 Day of Giving Includes Foundation Option

Foundation Donates New COE Student/Staff Activity Van

Photo: Interior view of new van.In the summer of 2015, the UMCOE Foundation funded the purchase of a new College of Engineering Student/Staff Activity van. This 15-passenger Ford van replaces an ageing van with the most current redesign for improved safety and utility. The Foundation worked with now-retired Marty Walker in 2015 after he made a grant proposal on behalf of the many student clubs he sponsors or coordinates. When the University was made aware of this donation, and the safety improvements needed in another older van, they agreed to match the Foundation’s gift through their budget appropriation process to the COE. The Foundation is proud that our COE Students can now travel to their many events in vans deserving of their enthusiastic involvement in engineering activities.

UMCOE Foundation Donations Surpass $300K in 5 Years

In the first meeting with the College of Engineering’s new Dean Elizabeth Loboa in January, the UMCOE Foundation was able to report that it had now received over $338,345 in donor contributions since it’s initial “start-up” campaign in late 2010.  These contributions have been from individuals, Foundations, corporations, and corporate employee-matching.  As a result, after paying for the overhead of starting this 501(c)(3) organization, the UMCOE Foundation has been able to contribute back to the COE with a Library Study Room upgrade project, the contribution to MEERC,  $34,500 in the 2012 Scholarship Campaign, Facility 50/50 Matching campaign, a COE Student Activity Van, over $20,000 in additional scholarships, and recently the start of an Endowment Fund.  In most cases, the Foundation is providing these contributions without applying an administrative overhead fee.

Signing of MU-UMCOE Foundation affiliation document by Thomas Hiles, Vice Chancellor for Advancement, Dean James Thompson, College of Engineering, and Ward Chambers, Foundation President, on May 8, 2013.

In May 2013, the University of Missouri formally recognized the UMCOE Foundation as an Affiliated 501(c)(3) organization. The Affiliation document was signed by the Foundation President, the COE Dean, the Vice Chancellor of Advancement, the University Chancellor and the University Curators. The Foundation has been working with the University Advancement Office as they formalized their Affiliation documents and processes, obtaining approvals through the Chancellor’s offices and the Board of Curators. The UMCOE Foundation is the first “NEW” Foundation to receive this status. This affiliation allows contributions by our donors to be recognized not only by the COE Shamrock Society but also by the University Jefferson Club. The Foundation also agrees to abide by Affiliated Organization Policies and Procedures.

Contributions to the UMCOE Foundation Surpass $100K

In the spring meeting of the COE Dean’s Engineering Advisory Council, the UMCOE Foundation was able to report to DEAC that it had now received over $100,000 in donor contributions since it’s initial “start-up” campaign in late 2010.  These contributions have been from individuals, Foundations, corporate matching, and most recently from an electric cooperative.  (See article on MEERC)  As a result, after paying for the overhead of starting this 501(c)(3) organization, the UMCOE Foundation has been able to contribute back to the COE with a Library Study Room upgrade project, the contribution to MEERC and $34,500 in the 2012 Scholarship Campaign.  In many cases, the Foundation is providing these contributions without applying an administrative overhead fee.

Arkansas Electric Cooperative Uses Foundation to Fund COE MEERC

The College of Engineering Electrical Engineering department has provided the leadership to establish a regional energy consortium:  Midwest Energy Efficiency Research Consortium (MEERC).  This consortium of academia, industry and government is formed to disseminate information, create academic training and advance development of energy efficiency technologies.  As part of their decision to join this regional MEERC effort, the Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation provided $25,000 in funding through the UMCOE Foundation to apply to the MEERC program.  As with the 2012 Scholarship Campaign, the Board of Directors voted to transfer the entire amount of the contribution without deducting any Foundation overhead fees.

In late 2011, the UMCOE Foundation had paid for most of its initial startup costs and the Board of Directors agreed to make a contribution to the College of Engineering of $10,000. The COE’s priorities were reviewed for an appropriate project for that amount, and it was agreed to use this contribution to upgrade a room near the COE Library to make it into a Study Room, with new construction, equipment and furniture. That project was completed in 2012 and the room was “dedicated” on October 18, 2013, with a plaque acknowledging the alumni donations made through the Foundation.

Foundation Surpasses Goals on Scholarship Drive

The UMCOE Foundation responded to the request in May 2012 by the Dean’s Engineering Advisory Council (DEAC) to support the shortfall in the College of Engineering’s Scholarship Fund.  Some students who met the merit requirements for the Dean’s fund were unable to receive scholarships due to this shortfall. The many donors to the Foundation for this scholarship fund campaign allowed the Foundation to contribute $34,500 to the COE in August 2012.  In addition, the Foundation Board of Directors voted to pass all of these contributions directly to the COE without applying any administrative overhead.
